Creative Struggle: The On-Ramp To Flow

I’ve been thinking about creative struggle and procrastination and wrote some thoughts on this. I feel moved to upload my handwritten entries so you can see what I really think, before the editor takes over and typed words become somewhat removed from my hands!

I made a little video for this concept of struggle being an on-ramp to flow, would you like to see it? I posted it on my Instagram page.

I have just been reading The Art of Impossible by Steven Kotler and he speaks about this stage is like a pre-loading stage for the brain. How there needs to be a build up and then a release. It is fascinating to hear about the underlying neuroscience. How neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine are released and make us feel slightly agitated as a result. In my therapy work I am used to helping people to manage this anticipatory state, but the feeling is that we usually want to avoid it. I find it so intriguing that in creativity it is an important part of the process and not something to be avoided.
